do you like halloween?

i'm only asking because i keep seeming to find more and more people who DO NOT LIKE halloween. not only do they not like it... they HATE it.

they think it's scary and awful and they can't wait for it to be here and gone already.

and i think that's kinda sad. because i freaking LOVE halloween!!!!!! love love love it! now, i don't like scary things. i can't watch scary movies because i don't enjoy them. i don't like ghouls and people with axes through their heads and shit. i don't like the idea of being terrified and chased through your home by an axe murderer with a grudge. i'm not into that type of scary crap.

and i know that for some people, that's what they love about halloween.

but you see, i just don't think about halloween in that way. for me.... halloween is magic! it's magical! like harry potter magical (minus the scary parts). i love the idea of witches and candles and spells and magic. but all good, positive ones. nothing like crazy vindictive spells. more like love spells, charms, and things that are fun and happy. halloween makes me feel like anything can happen. magic is in the air. and it only lasts that one night. and to me, it's totally exciting! there's something about the way halloween's night air feels. it's different than any other night. and i enjoy it! i think it's so much fun...

i love to decorate the house. and i've searched high and low for halloween decorations that aren't scary. i really hate the scary. so we might have gravestones at our house, but we have fun light up smiling ghosts, and a broom riding class sign next to the witches inn. just fun stuff. still halloween with skulls, ghosts, witches, etc... but not the type that is going to scare the crap out of your kids. or me.

i love the idea of fun magic. it makes me happy. hopeful. and that's what halloween is to me. a night of magical hope where anything can happen.

so what about you? love it or hate it?

Love it!!! But fighting with my 4 year old over a costume is giving me anxiety!!

I like it, but I'm at an age where I don't DO anything for it. I don't get dressed up and go to parties, and I don't have any kids to dress up, so I guess it is what it is!

I like the pumpkins and the change in season though, so Halloween is all good in my book.

Love it! I love the dressing up and suspending reality in favor of things other-worldly. I do not like watching stupid movies or almost peeing myself in haunted houses/mazes, but the rest is awesome.

Now that I have kids, I love getting their costumes together, watching age-appropriate themed movies, and seeing their faces light up when the big night finally arrives.

I'm a lover! If I weren't 28 and 5'10" I would totally go trick or treating. I too love decorating for it, I wish someone we know would have a halloween party costume required and everything! People just don't do that around here. Boo!

I hate it. I was actually interviewed by the Chicago Tribune last year over my hate of the holiday. But it is all from traumatic childhood experiences, like my drunk father stranding us at a haunted house alone when I was little.

I'm just not a fan of dressing up. I'm a fan of partying and candy, though.

I like it! I get the Halloween decorations out every year on October 1st. Nothing scary---pumpkins, scarecrows, black cats, friendly ghosts, and cute witches. I love going to the pumpkin patch, passing out candy, dressing up the kids, taking them trick-or-treating, and picking through their loot after they've gone to bed. :) I miss dressing up myself though, and I wish someone would have a party! Oh, and dealing with all the candy in my classroom the day after is a nightmare. :(

Luv it!! Pumpkins, decorations, candy corn....

Not so many trick-or-treaters come around here, but in my niece's/nephew's neighborhoods they do!

So Jenn, do you still dress up for Halloween? Anyone else here who does?

I haven't really dressed up, but I wore a Halloween themed shirt one year, and others I've worn colored wigs. (Pink one year...I said I was Jem! Y'know, of The Holograms?) I go around with my niece & nephew while they trick-or-treat.

Happy Halloween! (early)

I never heard of people who don't like Halloween (except those who dislike it for religious reasons). I adore it, although I don't dress in costume myself.

while i tend to decorate more for fall in general than for halloween i love the holiday. since my niece and were 8 months old i have taken them trick or treating. we have the best time and i love walking around wacthing all the kids getting there treats. my other favorite this time of year are the orchards and fall food. yummy, apple cider, cider donuts, apple pie, fresh picked apples, and pomagrantes and the hayrides and corn mazes. i like some scary movies but i will skip the haunted houses and haunted hayrides they freak me out. although i don't mind pulling a trick or two for fun.

Love. I love how kids run all around town hopped up on candy and everything seems all nice and neighborly, and you can dress up however you want to . . .

but hate that costumes these days are just an excuse to be hootchie mamas. There. I said it.

I also love it. I liked it prior to having kids, but love it now that we get to enjoy it with them.

You and I have so much in common it's almost scary sometimes. I love, love, love Halloween. I *think* it's because my b'day is two days after. When I was a kid that always meant halloween themed birthday parties. In any case ... I still love halloween. And halloween decorations. And all things fallish ......

People who don't like Halloween are wrong in the head. It is a time for fun and weirdness and candy.

I'm kind of ambivalent.

Growing up, we didn't celebrate Halloween since my father is a preacher and Halloween is the devil's holidar or some other bullshit. We did dress up and attend "Fall Festivals", but I never got to go Trick or Treating.

Now that I have a child, we do the Halloween thing. We dress up and go Trick or Treating. We do pumpkin patches and local Halloween kid's stuff. I don't decorate the house or go overboard, it's just a fun day that we can wear costumes and act silly. Then again, we do that almost every day in this house.

Basically, I just love the candy. I don't care how I celebrate it, but it had better end with a bag of candy.

I love halloween! It is one of my favorite holidays. I do not know exactly what it is that makes it so amazing, but it is. Maybe the fact that you get to escape reality for one night and be whoever you want to be and have fun. If you are a little too crazy no one will think its horrible, but rather awesome! I think that the free candy goes with out saying. I am 19 and still want to go trick-or-treating and I would if my boyfriend didn't insist that I am too old. =] I am not really a fan of the fall decorations or themes but LOVE halloween. Maybe cause I am so much like my aunt =] <3

love it---the nice kind and the scariest kind. I will torture myself though a haunted house and the person next to me will walk out feeling 100 ways of molested and on my end it simply wasn't sexual--I is just askeeered lol

I used to love it. I still like it, but with three kids and the way my life is right now, it feels like a lot of work. Which is silly, i know.

I love Halloween too. I love how now in Ireland everybody decorations for it. People have only been decorationing for halloween the last 5 years. Before that you couldn't buy any decorations anywhere. Now all the older people hate it and say we have gone all "americanised" I am so grateful as are my kids.
I get really excited it but never stress about it like I do about Christmas.
