what kind of blogs do you read?

i'm curious what kinds of blogs you read... and why? are you drawn to certain people because they appeal to you? or do you find that you read the really popular bloggers because you feel like that's who you are "supposed" to be reading? or maybe if you read them, they'll read you back.. or OMG, link to you in one of their posts?

i don't always read or play nice with others bloggers. i find that some can be way too political, or advocate-y, or trying to change the world with every post. sometimes i think they just try too hard. maybe i'm just more simple minded? or maybe i don't want to think about these heavy things everytime i read a blog post. i'm totally not that kind of person. i've talked about this before- how i'm not out trying to change the world with my blog. i'm not trying to create a discussion that takes over blogland with every post. i'm just here to talk about my life... however uninteresting it may be.

there are also bloggers whom i have met in real life and we just didn't gel. it's true that i have met some "a-list" bloggers who i didn't really have anything in common with and couldn't see myself hanging out with on a personal level. so i don't read their blogs. i'm not trying to be a bitch, i just don't see the point. i'm sure they feel the same way. it's not that it's personal really- but you just don't LOVE every single person you meet. i don't see anything wrong with that.

i like to read people who i feel are real. they may not be entertaining or funny every time they post, but they write about their life. and life isn't always funny. life isn't always worded so damn eloquently. and i think i can just relate to thoese kind of people more. people who just come off to me as.. i don't know... normal, everyday, type people. someone i would actually hang out with in real life. those are the people i like to read. and they are the people i consider friends. i care about what they write. i care about what they have to say. i enjoy reading their blogs because i care about what is going on in their life. i'm invested. like meg from sleepy new mommy.. she may not have a million readers or get hundreds of comments on every blog post, but i like her. i like her as a person... she seems like someone i would be friends with, which is why i'm pissed i'm not going to blogher this year because SHE IS GOING! so y'all better take care of her for me.

what about you? what kinds of blogs do you read and why?

****
can you tell me who i'm not reading? recommend a good, nice blog for me to read. tell me why you like it and all that good stuff? i definitely would like to read more REAL blogs, but i can't find them all on my own.
help?

I mostly read the same people I've been reading for a year. I went through a period of just click click clicking on new blogs and never really culled any. I've met a lot of them now, and that helps make the relationship personal, and so it remains worth my time to read them. I don't have the time to go looking for new blogs anymore, so something has to be pretty interesting for me to read now. I'm not a blog voyeur; it has to be about talking to the person, not just consuming writing. And I don't read anyone I've had a bad personal encounter or exchange with. I don't need to be reminded of it.

I also read hockey blogs.

BPD meant black hockey blogs.

And I especially read blogs by jerks who wrote me nasty emails, so I can see how stupid they are and laugh at them and call them a hack loser who scored a pity book deal.

I like your blog. Now bend over so I can really give you a good ass-kissing! :)

I like to read mostly light fare...stuff that's gonna make me laugh. That's what I write, that's what I like to read.

I try to read some heady stuff and I just get bored with it too quickly.

I don't think I read any of the "a-list" bloggers except for The Blogess cuz she cracks me up but I don't read her every day either.

I'm gonna go check out sleepy mommy now...have a good Friday.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand I just added Sleepy New Mommy to my reader after reading the first paragraph! Thanks! LOL!

Well you know I read Sleepy New Mommy and I love her and her blog. :) I also like Mandajuice---she's funny, honest, and entertaining! And Spongemom Sweatpants is hilarious. :)

I love blogs that make me laugh, cry, and empathize. I love bloggers who can be all of these things. I do read some shit too, but because some of these were the first blogs I ever read and I feel a little disloyal deleting them. Blog reading has enriched my life especially Americam blogs as it gives me an insight of your culture and look at our differeces. I love some of your traditions and have stolen a few. Have I mentioned I love your blog? Well I do.

I mostly read the blogs of good friends... and have picked up a few (like yours) from blog lists of those I enjoy... I usually find the writers I like follow others that are similarly entertaining ;)

I read some people that I read before, like you. Hai!!! A few "popular bloggers" although I remember them when they weren't. But mostly, I read the people who I think I'd get along with in life. Some have a lot of readers, some very few, but l of them seem to be awesome people.

I am finding that I just don't have time to find new ones, or half the time read the ones I do follow.

And since you asked, I'll give you two of my favorite people right now:

http://www.anymommyoutthere.com Which is written by Stacey, who I adore. She's a beautiful, funny writer but also one of the sweetest people in the world. And: http://amomtwoboys.com/ Who's awesome and sweet and funny. I read her even though her site takes forever to load. :)

I would like to recommend my blog, for your reading pleasure. And, if you ever come to Austin, I'll let you come hang out at my house, with my kids, the dog that likes to sniff crotches, and I'll mix you a mean margarita and feed you bourbon-laced cookies. Cause, I'm that kind of friend, dammit.

I read the blogs of people whose lives I have become committed to- they were in the infertility trenches when I was trying, and now I feel like I know them.

I used to comment on A-Lister blogs, but mainly because I wanted people to link back to me. That was when I was obsessed over comments, and felt like noone liked me if they didn't leave comments. That was also during the time that I was on hormones to get pregnant, and was threatening my husband with hammers, so who knows. I was a little crazy.

Oh, the mommy-bloggers who can't deal with dissenting comments. I once left a comment where I dared to disagree with a certain blogger (who is somewhat well-known), and I'll be damned, she BLOCKED me on Twitter. It cracks me up, because really? That's how she gets revenge?

I actually like when readers leave comments that aren't kissing my ass- because it shows that they are there for the content, and not just a "OMG! I LIKE YOUR BLOG!" variety of commenter.

But, hey, Jenn? OMG. I REALLY LIKE YOUR BLOG!

I haven't been in the blog world that long. For awhile I tried to read as many blogs as possible so I could learn what blogging was about. I was clueless. I still am pretty clueless. I missed the blogging 101 class. I'm learning as I go. I refuse to do the comment whore thing & comment everywhere just to get comments back. What's the point of that? I've settled into some bloggers I really enjoy & I rarely miss a post when they write. Also - I don't give a shit if anyone is on the A or Z list. I do care how they treat me if I run into them in the blogosphere. I've had A listers bend over backwards to be nice & others be asses. I hate the ones w/ mediocre followings who think they're RAWK STARS. What's with the over inflated egos? I do try to visit the blogs of people who leave comments for me when I can, but it isn't always possible with everything going on in my life. It's hard once you start getting more visitors (and I'm still a small shit!). Jeez you got me on a roll. Basically I don't know what the hell I'm doing, but I'm having fun.

I mostly read the same folks I have been reading for years. And I read my friends. I do read a few popular bloggers, but only if there is a reason, like if our children are the same age or if there is some other connection or interest.

One of my favorite bloggers who has turned into a personal friend is Monkey in a Suit: http://monkeyinasuit.wordpress.com/

Her writing goes the gamut from thought-provoking to gut-bustingly hilarious.

My relationship with Monkey is a superb example of the great things that CAN happen in the blogosphere (if we can look past all the immaturity that has been rife as of late). She and I began reading/commenting on each others blogs several years ago, then progressed to phone calls, then we roomed together at last year's BlogHer. She is one of my closest friends now.

The blog that I have been reading for the longest time (nearly 6 years now) is Throwing Things: http://throwingthings.blogspot.com/

It is simply one of the best pop culture sites out there that does not stray into tacky celebrity gossip. It also has a stellar set of commenters who contribute quality comments worth reading - it is one of the very few sites on which I keep track of the comments.

A blog has to meet one of 2 criteria for me - it has to be interesting or funny. Preferably both.

I have 113 blogs in my Reader. Most of them are Parenting bloggers, some I know, some I don't. I have a bunch of homeschooling blogs, and quite a few vegan food blogs--I'm not vegan but I love them nonetheless. Then there are some blogs created by friends, and some that I look at for inspiration.

I generally dislike bloggers who seem unhappy or mean-spirited, or ones who act like LIFE IS GREAT all the time. I also don't tend to stick to anyone who quotes Bible verses---for some reason, that just bugs me.

Some of my favorite "B list" bloggers/blogs (although maybe they are A list? Who the hell knows?) are Halushki, Toyfoto, Wendy Aarons, Gray Matter Matters & Issas Crazy World. . .there are more but I'm getting tired of typing and the kids (the kids!) need me for something. I guess that roll of tape I gave them didn't hold their attention that long.

I read all different "kinds" of blogs. And yes, it took me a while to figure it out, and I had to look around for those I felt were a good fit for me. Some have stopped blogging alltogether in that time, but like you - the good ones (to me at least) are the ones that I not only feel something for, but also have a knack for story telling.

And they don't have to be masters at weaving the words on page, just entertaining and yes, real - to me.

Now whether anything I read in blogland is real or not...that is something that hurts my brain to even contemplate.

But you either have to be wickedly funny or good at pretending to be to keep my attention for the long run! ;)

I have about 8 blogs I follow closely and have become good friends with. They are mostly mommy bloggers who I relate to. Then there are about 20-30 more that I read when I have the time. I'm cutting back though and trying to just keep tabs on the ones I really like...

When I quit pickleness a friend of mine encouraged me to join LiveJournal, so I checked it out. I now post there, very basic, here's what I'm doing type of posts. Very different from pickleness. Anyway, my friend's friends embraced me and I have become pretty tight with many of them and check in with them several times a day.

As for other blogs, I read yours DAILY because I lurve you. I also read Becky's Blog, Shanntastic (so glad she is back), MimiDrama who has become a friend, and a handful of others but not as regularly. And I'll be honest here and say if I ever read an A-lister it is purely for snark purposes (not proud, but it's true! nobody whines better than some of those peeps).

I've actually been thinking about this lately. I need to clean up my blogroll. I have a bunch of blogs in there that I don't read anymore. And there are other blogs that I probably read every day that I haven't gotten around to including yet.

In general I like to read blogs about people's daily lives. I like bloggers with a sense of humor. I am drawn to good writing, or at least great personality. I feel fickle when it comes to blogs. Some people I read for years, and then they just don't do it for me anymore.

I only read a handful of blogs. I don't like the majority of mommy bloggers because that's not where I am in my live, I don't like anyone too political or religious, and I don't want to get wrapped up in someone elses issues. I do like filthy mouths, sarcasm, and honesty though.

Is there a blog rating system? Did I miss out on that? I'm not sure who are the most popular bloggers are. From the awards and ads slathered over your blog? Eh, I don't pay any attention to those things. I read for different reasons. It's usually because at some point the writer touched me somehow. Either by humor, similar lives or they are just darn good at spinning a story that keeps my interest. I like the funny but I like the sad too. Or the ordinary. I like when a writer uses spell check although when one is writing from the heart they sometimes miss write, which is ok too.

I like reading about people. Its like when I sit in a coffee shop and try to imagine what kind of lives the other people lead. Blogs give me a peek into forbidden places I might never get to visit otherwise.

Meg said...

Aaaagh! Ster, I wish you were going this year because I would totally make out with you for that!

I find myself drawn to blogs that are real. I don't read most of the "popular" bloggers, although I do read a few, simply because I love their style of writing. But mainly I like to hear the struggles that people go through, the things they find funny in life, the little things. I don't comment on "popular" blogs because I feel like I'm just one among thousands. I'd rather read a smaller, lesser known blog where I can make a friend.

Meg said...

Also, political blogs make me want to bash my head in.

Chris said...

I like all the funny ones. Well, I mean those that at least have a sense of humor. I don't care if they have 99 bazillion comments or not. I'll still read.
You my friend are too much! I'll always read. You must be a female Jerry Seinfeld. You always hit on those things that most of us think, but do not say! Love all your posts!

Chris said...

OMG...I almost forgot. If you have never read Wiping Up Snot, the blog, please drop what you are doing and go read now! The vagina post was too funny!!! OK, as you were! Sorry Jennster, I had to say it!

i've gotten to the point where i read my friends and i read the GOOD writers. the ones who make my laugh my ass off. and the ones who blow me away with their writing. some fall into ALL these categories. like Mamatulip . she's GOOD STUFF, man. also? Metalia . if you aren't reading both of them, you are truly, truly missing out.

and obviously, if you aren't reading me, you are truly, truly missing out...

SUEB0B said...

I read people that make me laugh and think. That means you. And a bunch of other people.

I am still sitting here just grinning because Scientific Lutheran recommended *me*! Awwwww.

I read mostly people I have met and like, plus about 25 others that I haven't met but like...Ironically I read a lot of mom blogs but will usually stop while someone is pregnant, because, while I can se that pregnancy is amazing and crazy, I don't want to live it over and over and over.

I have an on-again off-again A List thing going. I appreciate that most of them are great writers, but in some cases I see almost no outreach to other bloggers beyond their golden circle, and that is what I think blogging/social networking is all about. So if you have a million blog readers but don't take comments and 15000 twitter followers but only follow 21 people, well, I'm done.

I only recently found your blog and to be honest, I liked your writing immediately because you seemed real - just like you talk about in this post. I have a lot of different types of blogs that I read - most of the authors are funny and have a sense of humor about them. They occasionally get deep, but not every day. There are some blogs where it seems the authors are trying to write deep stuff every day and I literally roll my eyes and unsubscribe. There are so many good blogs out there - I read some for fashion tips, some for decorating ideas, some for a crazy insight into the preppy world, some for parenting insights (even though I don't even have kids - so these writers are especially good!). But I love it when the writing makes me wipe a tear away - either becasue I'm touched or because I'm laughing so hard.

I read a ton of blogs, it's ridiculous.

More often than not, bloggers I read have something in common with my life and have a reasonable sense of humor. I especially love parent blogs and photo blogs.

My reads rarely have anything to do with whether or not I've met a person and liked them. I read plenty of blogs even though I don't like the writers in person, and I don't read several blogs even though I do like the writers.

Reading over all the other comments, I'm starting to sound quite fickle actually.

I can't stand bloggers that try to hard. They try so hard to make every post so deep - bleck.
