My niece just got one for Christmas and she's 11. The biggest problem is that she constantly texts her parents stupid stuff and forwards them those silly "send to ten friends" things. I just remind them that they bought it for her. :)
I hope you have unlimited texting because that is the only way middle school kids communicate. My daughter sends/receives about 6000 messages a month. This is nothing compared to her friend's 15,000. No one likes to talk on the phone because then there has to be a beginning and end to the call and that is just too much hassle.
He'll be texting nonstop. At least that's what my nephew does. He tells me it's so that no one overhears his conversations. But he does it at the table at dinner, in bed at night, first thing in the morning....
I used to think it was crazy for a kid to need a cell phone before they start driving. It's still a little silly. But I can see how "all the kids have one" and it's actually kind of practical when they're dropped off at the movies or walking home from school. The times, they are a changin'.

Don't feel bad. The Money Town kids get them in kindergarten now.
