it was like watching bambi.. but for reals!

yesterday we were surprised to find a brand new baby deer lying in a patch of grass under a corner of our building... see?

bambi 1

bambi jr consumed most of our day. we all ran to windows to check on him throughout the day (even the men here were totally smooshy when it came to b jr). we read online that bambi's mom leaving him for the day was totally normal (meagan wanted to call CPS.. i just figured she was a dirty whore and i had a new pet). the mom leaves him because he isn't strong enough to stand or run from predators- so she hides the baby where he can't be seen. i will admit, the spot for the day was perfect! except for all of us pesky humans.

bambi 2

so all day long we're waiting for mommy to come back and we keep asking eachother "has she come around at all? has anyone seen her? where is sheeeee?". FINALLY.. at the end of our day, the mom comes creeping over. she moved ever.so.slowly. i mean, to the point that we were all yelling in our heads, "OH MY GOD, MOVE! COME ON! HE'S RIGHT THERE! GO GET HIM!!! JEEEEEEEEEEEEZ!!!" it was almost painful to watch. you know how deer are- they take one hoof step at a time... look in every direction.. listen... put the hoof down on the ground... look around again.. listen some more.. repeat, rinse and lather.

so she gets to a point on the building and bambi jr sees her! OH.MY.GOODNESS. talk about pulling at your heartstrings. b jr stood up.. his legs were all wobbly (JUST LIKE BAMBI THE MOVIE!!!) and he walked over to her as fast as he could. it was the sweetest damn thing ever. then they walked away together and when b jr would run, he would hop around... it was hilarious and awesome and probably the coolest day ever!!!!

Flat out the most awesome post you have written in a long time. You captured everything in words and pictures and I truly felt like I was right there. Great job Jenn. Thank you so much for the smile and the happy ending.

What a terrific post. I can only imagine how touching and amazing it was to witness this. Well, I suppose I don't have to imagine it. I can just read your post and look at those great pics.

And do you know that people (MEN!) hunt them and kill them and that would mean poor little Bambi Jr. would be alone there waiting for his mommy to come back, but NO, some total ass thought he'd hunt a freakin' unarmed animal because it what, makes him feel manly? Grrrr!!

they can't kill the girls. LOL

Alison said...

Oh, how nice of them to let the girls live.

alison please don't be sexist or bigoted towards hunters. women hunt. and hunters enjoy nature and wildlife more than most people on the planet. we choose to get our food through hard work and by giving the animals every advantage. Remeber the next burger you see. that meat was taken from a miserable cow that led a fucked up life in a pen and got stuffed full of food and hormones and got a bolt shot in its head. At least i know the deer that i have got, had a wonderful life and thankfully a very quick end. much quicker than a coyote or a mountain lion would give them.

i stop and see nature every day at work, on my drive home and out camping. i see Does leave there fawns in spots and come back later. its awesome watching and being a part of nature. i stare at deer and turkeys and hawks because they are amazing. and i have nothing but thanks and respect for the deer and pig that i have been given the opportunity to take.

we are a part of the food chain and we are predators. hunters should be looked up to instead of looked down upon.

I guess I just disagree with you then.

Point has a Point women and men hunt and if it wasn't for legal hunters buying tags every year we would not have some of the youth programs and hunter safety. That money for goes back into the Parks and Rec and Fish and Wildlife as well.

Also there is twice as many bucks born as does and if the bucks were not cleaned out every year and let go then the fragile food supply would perish and all deer would starve. Whether you agree with it or not (and I undertsand the ones that don't) it is a neccessary evil.

For Jenn, You brought a tear to my husbands eye that you guys had the sense to leave the young charge alone and let his mother come back for him. He goes on many calls a year just like this when the mom comes back and there is human smell and rejects her young.

You guys ROCK and thanks for the pictures. They ROCK too!!!

How that poor baby deer survived all day without one of y'all trying to pick him up, play with him or something like that is beyond me.

:)

I still disagree.

LOL you and about every woman out there your not alone. Just ask husband when he issues deer tags each year to all the places you can buy them, he gets TONS of "bambi killer" emails a day on his site......and he really is a nice guy too!

thats fine, but i don't vilify non- hunters as weak or losers. im just saying don't look down on people that do hunt because they choose to get there food a different way.

i just don't like it when people paint the broad brush that hunters don't care or love animals. it couldn't be further from the truth.

do you want to come over for burgers?

Thanks, but no. We could get into a pretty heated political discussion. Another area where our views differ. :)

On your airplane post above. You much be one of those people who other feel comfortable with. I'm one too, which means I always get the life story. But I don't think it happens to all people.
