behold the drummer...

... who played the drums for the FIRST TIME EVER a few weekends ago and was actually, GOOD. we were at a garden reception for boyfriend's brother when i heard the drums playing in the background. i didn't think anything of it because they weren't great, but they didn't suck either. it wasn't the feeling of "oh my god, what the hell kid is banging on those drums, and someone shoot him please!!!"

but then someone said to me, "hey jenn, that's blake playing the drums you know." and i thought, "bullshit." but they insisted that it was him. so i looked. and it was. and then i think sunbeams shot from my eyes and ears with pride as i silently thought to myself, "he so doesn't suck at this!" because he so didn't. and then i said that thought not so silently to anyone who would talk to me or make eye contact. and in my opinion, that's pretty damn cool. (not the me talking part, the blake playing the drums well part.) so maybe we have a natural drummer on our hands?

i so want to buy him a drum set. i mean, i think i do.

You HAVE to get him those drums! I don't care if your eardrums bleed, he obviously rocks!

ps. Hope the movie was good - we're taking 8 eight-year-olds next weekend for Wyatt's b-day!

Yes, go for the drums. He will love it and it really will enrich his life (and maybe even yours!). Adam has made music his life and we have a music room, complete with drums, banjo, bass guitar, acoustic and electric guitars, sax, keyboard, amps, etc. EVERY SINGLE kid to ever come to our house is just attracted to that room. They are always respectful of the instruments, and they truly want to learn. Kids can do so much with exposure to things and Blake, well, obviously he's just a genius and could be the next rockstar, so again, go for it!

Being able to play an instrument = a smart kid. Really, in all my years of teaching, the smartest ones are the ones that are also talented musically. Plus, this must be your lucky day---the Target ad has an electronic drum set (to start, okay?) for $250, and when you get tired of the drums (or your neighbors/landlord), he can put the earphones on and nobody else has to listen. Yay for Target!

You totally should! It's gotta happen!

Oh man- you are so getting him those drums and you are SO going to hear them ALL DAY LONG and ALL NIGHT LONG. But when he's rocking out in a cool band 15 years from now, you'll be glad you bought them LOL.

Yeah, get the drums. :)

He so looks like a natural. Drums rock. My cousin has been playing since Blakes age (15 now) and he rocks. One thing though, once the boy has drums, you will never here silence again. ;)

Go for the drums.

My son wants drums, I asked him if he was insane! I have enough noise in my house.

Oh man - I think you should go for it, based on how adorable that picture is alone!

But get some earplugs while you're at it!

That's cool!

Just watch the neighbors - drums cause some enemies.

Dudette, by all means encourage, but don't do what one of my mates did and set up the kit next to your dining room table... because it sucks when you're trying to eat!!!

Blake looks like a pro in that picture!

I think Target has a new musical instrument section for kids. You might want to check out their drum set.

Yeah I think its a good idea Jen **snicker, snicker**
But if he asks for them and NEEDS to have them, let him come to you about it

I've always fancied having a go at the drums but we don't really have anywhere to put them. I've got a guitar and bass already but they don't take up much room. My brother (who has a friend with a kit) tells me you can't help but smile as you bash away.

run........now....fast......and far away!

My son tried the drums, was really good, we bought a drum set for his birthday, he played them all the time......I wanted to rip the heads off those drums and throw the whole thing through the window! IT DROVE ME NUTS!

p.s. we still have the drums....they are collecting dust in the garage.

Yes, you should. And you should put it right in the middle of the living room.
Fun times.

Seriously, embrace that. It could be a great outlet for him.

Good luck!

Totally get the drums! If he is good, you wont find it noisy at all!
We actually want to get Claire drums, but she is a bit too small.

Are you smoking crack? Buy your kid a drum set and you will go insane! Hopefully you have a sound insulated garage that he can play in or a cave in the mountains? Not that he's a bad drummer, but man that would drive me nuts. I would rather beat my toes with a hammer than listen to a kid bang on the drums for hours on end.

But thats just me :)

between the football, baseball, drums, cool mom and adorable face, he will have 8 girlfriends when he's in high school!

are you sure you want the drums in the house, though? maybe you can get him drum lessons, where the drums will be at a different location--then you won't have to hear them.

and stephanie a. is right--musical instrument playing can be very enriching. it will make blake a very well-rounded and interesting kid.

trivia fact for you: playing a musical instrument is the only activity scientists have found where the ENTIRE brain is active all at the same time. imagine the brain power you will be unleashing upon the world. good thing he's using it for good and not evil purposes.

p.s. props to you for letting your kid choose his own interests! my parents made me play violin and i always hated it. i don't even play any more. i will never force my kids to have hobbies that i like!
