lighting bugs? fireflies? fairies?!?!

in california, we don't have fireflies. we don't have lightning bugs. we don't have anything fun that lights up when it flies on a regular basis... except for airplanes. i've always heard about lightning bugs in country songs, and i'd seen them in movies before, but i'd never seen one in real life.

so picture this.. i'm in new jersey at my girlfriend tray's friends house (sister's cousin's dog's aunt's uncle's brother- just kidding). we've been bbq'ing and drinking all afternoon. it's starting to get dark and a group of us are outside sitting around, chatting, bullshitting, whatever. all of a sudden out of the corner of my eye, i see this little light. i turn my head to look and it goes out! so i'm staring at the air.. i just KNOW i saw something. then there it is again! A LIGHT! and then it goes out! by this time i'm looking around at all of tray's friends and no one is even paying attention. no one notices, no one cares. so this is the time my brain goes into dork jenn mode and starts thinking that only I can see the light. i'm so fucking special that this little light can only be seen by me!! and i think this because absolutely no one else is even noticing or moving or doing anything that even remotely shows they can see the light too. and so i am freaking.out. and then i think- omg, what if it's a fairy?!?! what if it's a little fairy flying around and only i can see it?!?! seriously, what is wrong with my brain?! so i'm sitting in this lawn chair, staring at my new found fairy best friend and my insides are all giddy and i'm laughing and i am thinking it's so fucking cool and i want to show someone, but everytime i go to point it out to someone, or say something out loud, the light would go away!!! and that would make me laugh harder. and i was seriously freaking out! and so finally, i grabbed someone and made them stare at the air while i muttered something to the effect of, "something keeps lighting up and then the light goes away.. and then it comes back.. and goes away and i swear i'm not crazy! i'm not seeing things, it's real!!" and the guy looks at me like i am seriously the dumbest california blonde he has ever encountered in his life and says something like, "yeah, it's a lightning bug." and i was like.. SHUTUP? REALLY?!? OMG, HOW COOL! i'm sure he thought i was some sort of mental. but i was just excited!

i'm pretty sure i spent the rest of the night staring the at trees just waiting and wanting those damn bugs to light up. they seriously were the coolest things ever and i've never seen one since!

HELP ME! The flying fairies are back!

They are fireflies DUR!

Oh.

Oh, to think of the memories that have been robbed from you! So many of my favorite childhood memories revolve around catching the buggers and trying to see if we could catch enough to light up an entire jar. It was so much fun as a kid.

jesus christ...um...yeah. yeah... LOL! YOU DUMBASS!!! I think I love you more now.

Isn't it funny? :) Different parts of the world have different things. I remember explaining to a freeked out forgien exchange student that lightening was OK. *LOL*

My daughter went out last week and tried to catch some in an old mason jar.

Jenn, I'm so glad you shared that. I had never before wondered how fireflies look to anyone else!

You know those big, brown, round flying things that fly randomly into lights and/or your hair and then lay on their backs kicking until they die two days later? They're June Bugs, not retarded fairies. FYI.

awww I LOVE when you write stories with my name in it. I miss you, i miss the forum. HELLOOOO EVERYONE IN THE FORUM!!!!!! and hello to the bloggersss tooo that I don't know.....jennster rocks!

funny you bring up lightning bugs, we were at a bbq yesterday and 2 of the kids were capturing about 5 lightning bugs a minute...running all over and I thought of you. do you have ESP dammit??? for real....they had a jar full. when we were little we'd smash them on our hands and glow in the dark. gross, i know.....but we liked to glow. or in your case, we smashed the fairies on us to give us some luck. what good that did. hahaa we were murderers. lol *smooch* come back and I'll make you lightning bug pie. k?

You crack me up! My son runs around and catches those in his bug catcher and then rubs them on him arms to glow. Of course when he doesn't kill the things, he saves them and they die in his catcher. Come to boring ol' Nebraska, we have tons of 'em!

I wouldve done the same damn thing...and Im not blonde and Im not from Calfornia, whats my excuse?

omg! Too funny!! You should come over and hang out in my back yard for an evening...you'll be attacked by the "fairies!" Seriously, Ohio and lightning bugs(as their called here) go hand in hand!

Meg said...

Oh that is hilarious! I can just see you doing that. But I would probably do the same thing if I wasn't a born and raised Oklahoman!

That blonde hair dye is seeping into your brain!!

LMFAO!!! Jenn, I did the same damn thing when we went to Tennessee... you have my sympathy. :)
ROFL!

Too funny! I've never seen a lightning bug either - too much time here in Cali. But I can just envision you staring into the air waiting for a little blip to go on...totally something I would do. Jen, you're not a dork; you're just entertaining.

Lightning bugs are the coolest. My daughter loves chasing them around and I did also when I was her age. I didn't know that there aren't any in CA!

I have seen them a few times on various vacations. I love the fairy thing. Too cute.

I was scared of them the first time. Flying glowing things. Shit.

I love this story, Jennster, and your telling of it is awesome! Whenever I complain about California to my husband I always bemoan the lack of fireflies. Who can have a childhood without lightning bugs? Sacrilege!
(Though it is pretty nice here, lightning bugs or not. :))

My kids like to try to catch them. We have tons of them here in MS..

Too Funny. I've never seen them either, but heard 'bout them in songs (like on VH1 country - eeeeek!). I probably would've thought I was having some sort of flashback . . . oops! Great post!

The fireflies are one of the best things about summer in the midwest. Course you usually are batting at mosquitos too..

You are such a dork, but I love ya anyway! Yay for my tiny mug shot pic being in your blog! :)

I miss fireflies too...but I found a place where you can get the fireflies like they have in Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland installed in your backyard... Not nearly as cool as the real thing, but close enough for me!

You crack me up. How many drinks did you have in ya by then?

Undercover Angel said...

LOL! Jennster, I can picture that so well. It's too bad he told you they were fireflies. You could have had an awesome story to tell your son about the night you actually saw a fairy...

Jenn, you are killing me. I miss lightning bugs. They aren't out here in CO either, but I grew up with them in OH.

My son and I like to sit on the front porch step together in the early evening and watch the fireflies. He likes to make up stories about how they are planning a party together!

Speaking of parties, you-me-Friday night at BlogHer-drinks in the lounge-okay? YES!

June bugs give me the creeps. my sister tried to throw one at me the other day, and i almost had to punch her in the face. i'll try to think of them as fairies next time so i don't freak out.

LOL!!

do you think if you ate one your stomach would glow?

Hee! I so miss the fireflies of my childhood. Obviously, it's too friggin' hot in Arizona for them, but come on, California's not so bad. Fireflies, you must come visit!
Oh, and as for your "duh" moment, you're not the first person it's happened to. I remember one particular summer when a newbie to the neighborhood thought she was going nuts. Imagine the fun my 6-year-old self had in telling her she wasn't imagining the flickering lights. "It's not too much pot, lady; it's fireflies!"

sweatpantsmom said...

Can I have some of what you were drinking?

(Being a native Californian, I probably would have thought they were fairies, too. Or radioactive wasps.)

Thats a great story! lol!

Jackass! The drugs in NJ aren't even as close to the ones in CA are they?

Pendullum said...

Great story...
My daughter thinks that they are the millions of good faeries that are out for a party...

Did it occur to you that maybe alcohol "we've been bbq'ing and drinking all afternoon" was a tiny factor in the Fairy theroy.

You are too funny. What a great story. My brother used to be obsessed with catching one so he could EAT it and then have his stomache light up. Freak.

When I lived in Ohio and then when I'd go back and visit my grandparents, I'd catch them when I was a little girl. A few yrs ago Shay said she'd try and mail me one from PA
LMFAO

That is funny.

My son loves fireflies. Every time he sees a light, he says "firefly?" Maybe I should tell him they are magic fairies.

OMG you are too funny, girl. great story. i love how you thought it was a fairy.

i was OBSESSED with fairies when i was a kid. i thought they were the coolest thing ever and made my mom read bedtime stories about them (we had a big fairy story book).

i used to go outside and build little houses for the fairies to live in. because i thought fairies were both real and homeless. i would make them out of bark, moss, twigs, etc. i would nestle the houses in the roots of trees and stuff.

man, i was a weird kid.

i didn't know there were no lightning bugs in certain parts of the country. huh. seems like i am the dummy in this story. i thought Cali was the same as the east coast except no humidity and fewer trees. and different stores. now i feel edu-ma-cated.

anyway, aren't they so nice? very summery and romantic. kind of like nature's party lights. :)

Jenn said...

Seriously, I never realized that there weren't lightning bugs everywhere in the US. That's odd....why the hell don't you have them? And what DO YOU have that we don't?
